The chronology of The Department of Truth combines fictional operations, disputed institutional histories, and references to documented real-world events. Entries must preserve those categories. A date attached to a real event does not confirm the fictional explanation placed around it, and a character’s confident account does not automatically establish canon.
Events directly depicted or reliably established within the continuity.
Accounts attributed to characters or organizations whose reliability may be limited.
Real dates and events presented without adopting the comic’s fictional explanation.
1960s: contested origins
The assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 is documented history. The Department of Truth builds a fictional secret history around that event and the figure of Lee Harvey Oswald. That secret history belongs to the comic’s continuity and should never be presented as an account of the real assassination.
Department narratives place important institutional activity in the Cold War period. The exact reliability of those accounts varies according to speaker and issue context.
Late twentieth century operations
Stories set during later decades explore how the Department responds to changing conspiracy cultures, moral panics, cryptid folklore, and new systems of media circulation. Some entries can be placed in broad historical periods without a defensible day or year. Those dates should remain approximate.
Cole Turner era
The main narrative begins with Cole Turner’s investigation of a flat-Earth gathering and his recruitment by Lee Harvey Oswald. Subsequent cases expose him to manifestations and to the conflict between the Department and Black Hat. The series’ publication sequence provides the safest reading order even when individual issues move backward in time.
Later revelations revisit Cole’s childhood, family, and earlier experiences. These scenes change the interpretation of the present-day plot, but the story does not always supply calendar dates precise enough for a day-by-day reconstruction.
